How Is Retaining Wall Height Measured?
One of the most common permit mistakes is measuring only the exposed face of the wall.
Many building departments measure retaining-wall height from the bottom of the footing to the top of the wall. Part of the wall and footing may be underground, so a wall that appears to be only three feet high above grade may exceed four feet under the applicable measurement method.
